Three Things To Know Before Painting Your Furniture Creation

Making just about anything using old pallets is all the rage now. People are making furniture, games, and landscaping décor using old pallets because they are inexpensive and easy to use. One thing that is not always being done is taking the time to figure out how to paint their new creations properly. You do not want to put forth so much effort only to have the item look lackluster because the paint was not applied properly. Use the following guide to learn a few tips for properly painting your pallet furniture or any furniture you buy that you want to make over to be more unique.

Do a Thorough Inspection First

Before you use any pallet to make a creation, take the time to actually inspect it from top to bottom. You want to look to make sure that no bacteria or fungus is growing on the surface of the pallet. Even if it appears that you can easily wipe it off, you do not want to use these pieces of wood because they could be weakened by the growth.

Sand the Wood Well

You want to be sure that you take the time to sand the wood down well, especially if you are using it to make a piece of furniture. The wood will be very rough and could cause someone to get splinters in their skin when they lean or sit on the wood. You can use a sander to make the sanding go a little quicker.  Be sure to dust off any loose dust and debris with a wet cloth before continuing.

Always Add a Primer

You want to be sure that you have a clean pallet to work with when it is time to paint the pallet. Applying a thin coat of primer will cause the surface of the pallet to be as uniformed as it can possibly be so that you can create a professional look when you paint the project you created. Be sure to apply the primer evenly over the entire project. Primer is available as spray paint or as paint that you paint onto the surface of the project with a paintbrush.

After the primer has dried a few hours, your project will be ready to be painted. Be sure that you use a color that you will like for years to come and apply the paint evenly over the entire piece. The paint should dry overnight before you use the item to ensure that the paint has plenty of time to dry.
